Welcome to today’s article where we will help you work on golf club speed. How to swing a golf club faster and build faster swing speed. In this intro, before diving into swing tips below I want to highlight my video covering golf swing speed. Check it out and also subscribe to our YouTube Channel here.

Ever stood behind a pro golfer and watched them swing. You’d be in awe at how fast they can swing a golf club. Rory Mcilroy is one of the favorites to watch crush a golf ball. In order to generate such intense and fast club speed Rory worked on the following 7 golf swing tips we’ve put together for you today.

1.  Wide Stance

The driver is the most powerful golf club in your bag and will help you hit the longest distances when swung properly.

Since it’s such a powerful golf club, it requires a solid base to support the swing speed generated. Widen your stance and you’ll be more stable with enhanced balance to help you generate a faster swing under control.

2. Tilt Your Spine

If you analyze a professional golfer setting up for a tee shot you’ll notice they tend to tilt their spine so they are leaning away from the ball slightly. Their front shoulder is raised up more than their back shoulder.

This helps them swing up at the ball with a driver which is important for launching it far.

But be careful on the follow through that you don’t resist the weight shift forward. You should still finish with your weight towards your target rather than hanging back on your back side.

3. Use More Loft

Another reason many golfers struggle to get distance in their golf swing is they de-loft the club face during the swing.

Loft is super important to launching the golf ball high and hitting higher shots allows the ball to carry farther before landing. This is especially important on softer courses where the ball doesn’t get as much distance from roll once it lands.

Analyze what loft you currently use on your driver. Most are between 9 degrees and 12 degrees with the middle loft of 10.5 being standard.

You can adjust the loft on adjustable drivers up or down a degree or two but if not, then maybe consider buying a higher lofted driver.

4. Swing with a Lighter Club & Heavier Club

One of the keys to increasing your golf swing speed is training with different weighted clubs.

Training with light weight clubs helps you naturally swing faster and get used to how it feels to swing faster. It activates your fast twitch muscles and helps you build on them to generate more club speed.

You can also work with heavier weighted clubs to build strength and get comfortable swinging fast, while under control with a heavy club.

Then when you switch back to the normal weighted club, it will feel much lighter helping you swing faster like when you practiced with the light weight golf club.

5. Golf Exercises at the Gym

Build power into your muscles by performing golf specific strength training workouts. Power is a combination of speed and mass so try exercises that use both of these principles.

Your legs are the tree trunks to building a strong, fast golf swing and your core/abs are the stability muscle that helps transfer energy from your legs to your arms while staying under control.

Example exercises:

  • Jump squats
  • Push ups
  • Weighted lunges
  • Deadlifts
  • Planks
  • Russian twists
  • Medicine ball throws

6. Stretch

Stretching is one of the simplest ways to add distance to your golf swing.

It will help you increase your flexibility so your muscles can turn back wide in the golf swing which can help you generate some additional power and club speed if done right.

Tight back muscles can also hinder golfers so stretching can help keep these muscles lose and limber.

7. Use a Golf Simulator or Launch Monitor

Our final tip today to help you improve your golf swing is practicing on a golf launch monitor. This device will share all kinds of data with you about your golf swing so you can see things like:

  • Swing Speed
  • Ball Speed
  • Club Path Angle (right, square, or left of target)
  • Face Angle (open / closed)
  • Launch Angle
  • Carry Distance
  • Roll Distance
  • Ball Spin Rate

Each of these metrics will tell a story of why your swing is doing what it does. If you have lots of curve like a slice or a hook you can read the club path and face angle numbers and make adjustments until your correct it.

If you’re ball spin rate is too high, you may be losing distance from roll and not getting enough roll when the ball lands.

If your launch angle is low, you could adjust loft and increase it like we talked about as a golf swing tip earlier in the article.
